The Spanish words caballo and caballero are closely tied to La Palma's equestrian tradition. During traditional horse races, riders gallop along roads temporarily closed to traffic, watched by enthusiastic local crowds.

For motorists, these events can unexpectedly change a journey. If traffic stops at a road closure, the best response is the island's familiar tranquilo, tranquilo: wait calmly until the horses and support vehicles have passed and the road reopens.

Visitors hoping to explore La Palma on horseback can find guided rides for different experience levels in the north-west of the island. Routes may cross vineyards and pine forest, following narrow trails or wider forestry tracks with views of the mountains and Atlantic Ocean.

When enquiring, give an honest account of every participant's riding experience, age and physical needs. Ask about duration, difficulty, suitable clothing, helmets and other protective equipment, and confirm whether the ride is appropriate for children or complete beginners.

Weather and trail conditions may require a route to be changed. Closed sturdy footwear, long trousers and protection from sun or rain are sensible. Always follow the stable's instructions; pace and route are determined by safety, terrain and the welfare of the horses.
